The modern literary Vepsian language uses a modified Latin alphabet consisting of 28 letters: (The order is as follows) Aa, Bb, Cc, Čč, Dd, Ee, Ff, Gg, Hh, Ii, Jj, Kk, Ll, Mm, Nn, Oo, Pp, Rr, Ss, Šš, Zz, Žž, Tt, Uu, Vv, Üü, Ää, Öö, ' (pehmenduzznam, softening sign).

Ь ' (softening sign) is never used after a soft consonant before ä, ö, ü, e, i: lämoi, mürk, siloi, söndkurk, venänik;
Ь the following consonants cannot be softened, so the softening sign is never used after them: b, f, j, k, v;
Ь the softening sign is never used after č, š and ž
As seen above, the consonants followed with the softening sign can be doubled (form a geminate): pal'l'az, vel'l', lat't'as etc.
